Raju can dream of future different from his past
posted January 23, 2012

Nine year old Raju Kumar, comes from the socially shunned, squalid, musahar ghetto (rat-eating community) in the village of Khajuri in Patna district. Centuries of deprivation, apartheid have driven the ‘untouchable’ Musahar community to live in sub-human conditions confined to performing wretched and unhygienic tasks such as cleaning of human waste.
Both Raju’s parents are landless laborers living much below the poverty line. They don’t even have a straw roof hut which is the normal habitat of a musahar family. His family lives in a make shift hut in the fields in the fields they work in, provided by the landlord. Their living conditions are extremely difficult. Raju Kumar is the eldest son in the family, and joined Shoshit Samadhan Kendra, the free English medium school run by the Shoshit Seva Sangh in January 2010. He can look forward to a bright future provided he works hard at his studies and fully utilizes the facilities now available to him.
Since joining SSK in January 2010, Raju Kumar has received clothes and books and is adjusting well in the school hostel. His teacher thinks highly of Raju and is quite confident that Raju will do well in studies. His first year of school was made possible due to the kindness of donors who donated through SeeYourImpact.
Your generous donation, Bellevue Rotary Foundation, will ensure that Raju gets to attend another year of school at Shoshit Seva Kendra and continue to excel in studies. Your generosity has changed despair into hope and hope shall lead to achievement.
Your generous donations, Praveen and Tom, will ensure that Raju has clothing and comprehensive medical care for an entire year. Thank you.
Thank you, Bellevue Rotary Foundation, for enabling Raju to have a future different from his past.

Manoj is keen to shoulder his responsibilities
posted August 10, 2011

Sixteen year old Manoj Kumar lost both his parents a few years back. Since then, he and his sister, Nirmal Kumari, have been brought up by their grandfather who is a landless laborer. Because of his old age, their grandfather struggles to find work, and the family barely has enough food to keep the hunger pangs at bay. Since their grandfather is very old, Manoj has always been conscious of the fact that looking after his sister would eventually be his responsibility and he despaired of ever finding a job that would ensure a sustainable livelihood.
The future looked very bleak for Manoj till he got admission into the free English medium school run by Shoshit Seva Sangh. Manoj is now in Grade 5, and his grades have been consistently high in the four years that he has been in the school. He does particularly well in Maths and Science, and hopes to become an engineer. Even a few years back, nobody in his extended family (or even his community) would have even dared dream of engineering as a viable career option, but Manoj is confident of making his dream a reality.
During the last academic year, thanks to the previous support from donors on SeeYourImpact, Manoj’s tuition and clothing and care was sponsored for a full year.
Last year in Grade five, Manoj secured an overall 69.2% scoring, 58/100 in English, 66/100 in Hindi, 85/100 in Maths, 76/100 in Science and 61/100 in Social Studies.
Your donation, Bellevue Rotary, of a year of tuition and comprehensive clothing and care for an entire year will enable Manoj to continue his studies in grade six.
Thanks to your support, Manoj can now concentrate on his studies without worrying about anything else.

Ajay’s can tackle the challenge of grade 3, without worrying about anything else
posted June 16, 2011
Dear Kandace, Craig, David, Lee, Sarah, Pradeep, Peter, Michael, Kate, Bill, Bill, and Greg,
Ajay is 9 years old and comes from a Musahar Ghetto in a village called Khhori in Bihar, India. Both his parents are illiterate and landless agricultural laborers. They get seasonal employment and live much below the poverty line. His prematurely aging parents can hardly afford a decent life for themselves and their six children. Ajay was admitted to the free English medium school run by Shoshit Seva Sangh in December 2007.
During the last academic year, thanks to the previous support from donors on SeeYourImpact, Ajay’s tuition and clothing and care was sponsored for a full year.
Last year, in grade 2, Ajay secured an over all 57.6%, and scored 64/100 in English, 59/100 in Hindi, 60/100 in Maths, 66/100 in Science and 71/100 in Social Studies, in the final annual examinations. He has now been promoted to grade 3. Though the formal academic year in India begins only in June, Shoshit Seva Sangh keeps the school running throughout the year, because the boys do not have a congenial family environment to go back to for the holidays.
Your donation of a month of tuition each, Kandace (x 2), Craig, David, Lee, Sarah, Pradeep, Peter, Michael, Kate and Bill (x 2), will enable Ajay to continue his studies in grade 3.
Your donation, Greg, will enable SSS to provide sufficient clothing and comprehensive medical care to Ajay for an entire year.
Thank you all for coming together and supporting Ajay’s education for an entire year. It takes him one step closer to his goal of moving himself, his family and ultimately his community out of acute poverty.

Pankaj is excelling in Math and Science!
posted May 3, 2011

Eleven year old Pankaj comes from a musahar ghetto known as Maharaja-Pali Toli, located in Patna district. The hut he shares with his mother can be seen in the background in the photograph above. His father was killed tragically a few years ago and his mother now works as a landless laborer. Landless laborer’s in Patna generally receive a daily wage of Rs. 25 (approximately 50 cents) during the working season, which only lasts about 6 to 8 months in a year.
The social-economic situation in Bihar being what it is, Pankaj could never even have dreamt of getting a good education, much less one in where English is the medium of instruction.
Pankaj is now in Class V and has been at Shoshit Samadhan Kendra, the free English medium school for boys, for over two years. Pankaj is doing extremely well in class V and in the mid term exam he averaged 75% across English, Hindi, Maths, Science and Social Studies.
Your donations, Kandace, Dennis, Leo, Rick and Beth, Adam, Akiko, Anil, David (x 2), Howard, James and Praveen, of a month of tuition each, will ensure that Pankaj gets a level playing field to compete with the best and work towards ensuring a future which he or his parents could never have dreamt of.
Thank you, Kandace, Dennis, Leo, Rick and Beth, Adam, Akiko, Anil, David (x 2), Howard, James and Praveen.
